Dark bands run down the length of the body with yellow patches between them. The belly is yellow and is mottled with dark blotches. Its scales are keeled and there is a double row of scales under the tail.

Fish, frogs, and tadpoles
Reproduction:
Mates in spring and gives birth to 2 - 50 babies in late summer.
Habitat:
Near a permanent body of water

It can often be seen basking in the morning sun, but this snake is usually active at night - especially after heavy rains - searching for frogs.
